ACCESSanitation – Accelerating City to City Exchange for Sustainable Sanitation
Many countries in South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa are unlikely to meet the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) target to half the number of people without access to adequate sanitation.
In addition many more countries are relying on unsustainable sanitation systems which pollute local water supplies causing disease and environmental degradation. Urban areas are particularly affected as rapid population growth and the resulting urban sprawl and informal settlements increases the need for new infrastructure and overwhelms facilities that do exist. The links between inadequate sanitation and poverty is well known and it is widely acknowledged that improvements in sanitation facilities can have a positive impact on health and livelihoods.

About the Project
ACCESSanitation is a three-year project supported by the European Union. It began in December 2009 and is expected to end in November 2012. The project primarily aims to improve the sanitation situation in ten selected cities in India and the Philippines by developing local capacity to plan, design and implement sustainable sanitation systems.
Overall objective: To enable local authorities to promote and initiate sustainable sanitation solutions thus improving health conditions, alleviating poverty, fostering the local economy and increasing food security
Specific objective: To increase local government-led solutions for locally appropriate sustainable sanitation and relevant behavioural change in 10 cities in India and the Philippines.
