About ecoBudget
The development of ecoBUDGET was confirmed at the UN World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg in 2002 as an appropriate mechanism for implementing Local Action 21 and for supporting local - and thus global - sustainable development.

ecoBUDGET is a tested approach, which showed high replication potential in European circumstances. In two pilot projects the system was successfully applied in a total of eleven local governments in Europe. ecoBUDGET has been successfully implemented in constituencies ranging from 5,000 to 500,000 inhabitants with varied political, cultural and geographic contexts.

ecoBUDGET  Asia
The goal of this project is to transfer the ecoBUDGET knowledge from two European cities (which have already adopted ecoBUDGET ) to two Asian local authorities and develop a model environmental management system for Asian cities. This project, funded by Europe Aid Asia Urbs programme, will last until 2007 and involve the participation of four cities: the city of Bologna (Italy), the city of Växjö (Sweden), the Guntur Municipal Corporation (India), and the Province of Bohol (Philippines). ICLEI support to project implementation involves the Sustainability Management Team of the European Secretariat, the South Asia Office and the Southeast Asia Office.

During the next three years Guntur and the city of Tubigon (as a test case for the Province of Bohol) will prepare, implement, and evaluate a full cycle of ecoBUDGET with the further goal of adopting it as their institutional management system. The partnership with Växjö and Bologna as well as ICLEI's assistance will result in the adaptation of the system to Asian conditions.
