This workshop focused on how councils can engage with their communities, key stakeholders and local media to discuss alcohol related issues.
The workshop assisted participants to design community engagement strategies, build support for local area policy solutions, and to prepare more proactive communication agendas than the responsive cycle local governments often get trapped into with their local media.
Planners Guides for NSW and Victoria – based on learnings from the highly successful CSHC Planners Masterclass series – were also be launched at the workshop.

This two-day workshop for local government in Victoria focused on adjusting existing reporting frameworks to integrate sustainability principles.
The workshop covered: - what Sustainability Reporting is and how it fits with other legislated requirements
- how to establish objectives and target audience for Sustainability Reporting
- an introduction to the Global Reporting Initiative including an understanding of the principles and guidelines for reporting
- practical examples of how to overcome challenges and obstacles when integrating sustainability into existing reporting, presented by a guest speaker from local government
- preparing for Sustainability Reporting with take-away tools and templates

The ICLEI Oceania Recognition and Briefing Breakfast at the ALGA National General Assembly on Tuesday 15 June brought together more than 80 delegates from councils across Australia. View images>
These councils have continued their partnership with ICLEI through what could be best described as a very difficult year for those committed to responding to climate change and to broader sustainability agendas at the local level.
ALGA President Cr Geoff Lake welcome delegates and Chair of the ICLEI Oceania Board, Cr Cathy Oke, presented an update on ICLEI’s work with Bill Forrest, ICLEI Oceania CEO.
22 awards were presented to council representatives for achievements in the Water Campaign™ and Cities for Safe and Healthy Communities, and ICLEI Members and CCP Partners were also recognised.
Geoffrey Rutledge, Director – Ministerial and Corporate, ACT Government, provided the keynote address, speaking of his government’s long-term relationship with ICLEI Oceania and the territory’s commitment to action on climate change.

ICLEI Oceania was pleased to participate in the Regional Queensland Corporate Governance Conference 2010, hosted by Townsville City Council.
We presented a full-day workshop session on Preparing for Sustainability Reporting, with other sessions on Risk Management presented by SEQ Water Grid Manager and Information Privacy presented by the Office of the Information Commissioner.
Day 1: Preparing for Sustainability Reporting Risk Management, presented by ICLEI Oceania - Sustainability reporting and its role as a management tool
- The benefits of sustainability reporting
- Sustainability reporting within the context of the Queensland Local Government Act 2009
- Determining key objectives and target audiences
- The basic principles of the Global Reporting Initiative and how to incorporate them into local government reporting
Day 2: - Risk Management Framework Workshop, presented by Barry Dennien, CEO of SEQ Water Grid Manager
- Information Privacy, presented by the Office of the Information Commissioner

ICLEI Oceania Breakfast Forum LGMA National Congress, Adelaide, 17 May 2010
The ICLEI Oceania Breakfast Forum held at the Local Government Managers Australia National Congress in the Adelaide Convention Centre commenced with around 70 delegates in attendance, including Senator Penny Wong, Minister for Climate Change, Energy Efficiency and Water; Neil Hartley, National President LGMA; Mayor Felicity-Ann Lewis, President LGA SA; and Mayor Troy Pickard, President WALGA, together with mayors, shire presidents, councillors, CEOs and general managers from across the country.
Following a welcome by Neil Hartley, the ICLEI update by new ICLEI Oceania CEO Bill Forrest and the keynote presentation from Senator Wong, an expert panel described and discussed their adaptation work.
The panel comprised Dr Peter Hayman, Principal Scientist, South Australian Research and Development Institute; Kate Nelson, Director Planning and Community, East Gippsland Shire Council, Victoria, Dr Douglas Bardsley, Senior Lecturer, Geographical and Environmental Studies, University of Adelaide and Dr Hartmut Fuenfgeld, Manager Climate Change Adaptation.
