ecoBudget
ecoBUDGET® provides local governments with a framework for political decision-making geared towards sustainable local development. This environmental management system is based on the concept of environmental budgeting, called for in the Aalborg Charter of the European Sustainable Cities & Towns Campaign, and focuses on the effective long-term management of natural resources and the urban environment.
ecoBUDGET is unique as it is specially designed for local governments, and its flexibility allows local authorities to adapt the system to their specific ecological, political, economic and socio-cultural circumstances. As with financial budgets, ecoBUDGET applies an annual cycle, which follows the customary budgeting routines of local governments. It is based on a political decision making process involving the prioritization of local environmental issues, target setting, and monitoring and reporting mechanisms to improve accountability and transparency. Furthermore, its comprehensiveness, adaptability and effectiveness make it a management tool that can, once successfully installed, be effectively transferred to other aspects of local public administration and urban management.
