Cities for Climate Protection

About

Cities for Climate Protection – Australia

CCP Australia was established in 1997 when twenty-nine councils piloted the program and provided the local government sector access to program, technical and political support for local greenhouse action. Federal Government funding enabled the program to be rolled out across metropolitan, regional and rural Australia to become the largest local government greenhouse action program in the world.

In 2009 there were 238 councils participating in the CCP Australia program covering 84% of Australia’s population. CCP Australia gained an international reputation for the solid, systematic and innovative work undertaken by councils in support of local action on climate change.

Communities for Climate Protection – New Zealand

In 2004 the CCP New Zealand program was established with funding from the New Zealand Government. In 2009 when funding ceased there were 34 district, city and regional councils participating in the program with an office hosted by the City of Wellington.

Today the legacy of the work undertaken by Australian and New Zealand councils is available and forms the basis for building CCP Australia and New Zealand Generation 2. For access to the reports, projects, tools and partners go to:

CCP Partners

ICLEI Oceania's climate change work continues through CCP Partners, with a focus on high-level political and management support.

More than 60 councils from Australia and New Zealand have shown their support for local climate action by joining CCP Partners. ICLEI Oceania will work with these councils to support them in their ongoing mitigation work, while developing the 'next generation' CCP program, building on the outcomes of the international climate talks.

CCP Partners is designed to ensure that past lessons and actions are built upon, and that the local government sector is positioned to respond to the opportunities and issues that will arise out of legislative and regulatory responses to the impacts of climate change.

As world leaders prepare to meet in Copenhagen in December to negotiate a post-Kyoto global climate agreement, cities and local governments are pressing hard to be included in the agreement’s text. ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability is coordinating the world-wide effort to ensure the work and experiences of cities and local governments are recognised in the new UN climate agreement.

The intention is for cities and local governments to strengthen their voice in the international climate arena, gain recognition for their mandate at a national level and potentially benefit from additional resources at the local level, thus ensuring the entire chain of government – from national to local – is involved in the implementation of the climate agreement in each country.

ICLEI Oceania is working with the Council of Capital City Lord Mayors (CCCLM) to ensure the push to have cities and local governments included in the text succeeds. ICLEI Oceania has provided a detailed report on the successful work undertaken over the past 12 years by cities and local governments through the Cities for Climate Protection Australia program.
