Local Governments advocate for a strong, comprehensive and global post-2012 global climate agreement that includes ambitious reduction targets, as well as actions for adaptation, technology transfer and finance.

In this Agreement, the key role of Local Governments in climate change must be internationally recognized. Local Governments must be empowered and resourced to go further in their Local Climate Action to help national governments in the implementation of the Agreement.

During 2009, substantial efforts have been made to mobilize local governments around the world in this advocacy process through various events. Local-national dialogue events took place in Australia, Brazil, China, EU, India, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, Portugal, South Africa and South Korea.

Furthermore, Local Governments were represented at all pre-COP events in 2009 in Bonn, Bangkok and Barcelona. These opportunities were used to carefully follow the international negotiations and to interact directly with the negotiators from countries such as Algeria, Australia, Brazil, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Japan, India, Mexico, Norway, Panama, Senegal, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the USA.

Local Governments will intensify their advocacy efforts at COP15 to strive for a strong and comprehensive post-2012 global climate agreement. The Local Government Climate Lounge will act as local government advocacy base in the Bella Center, the COP15 venue.
