Workshop Audience in Ahmedabad

On 18 August 2009, the Sub-National Workshop on Indian Cities' Perspective on Post-2012 Climate Agreement’ was held at the School of Planning, Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology campus in Ahmedabad, India.

During the workshop, ICLEI South Asia shared the Energy Status Summary of the project cities from West Region (Ahmedabad, Surat, Rajkot, Thane, Nagpur, Pune, Sangli, Jaipur, Udaipur). Participants shared experiences on renewable energy/energy efficiency activities being taken up by their respective city corporations. They all agreed to the view that the local governments should have a say in the formulation of national policy and their involvement in international treaties and programmes related to climate change and associated activities. Along with discussion on the energy status and action plans, the viewpoints and suggestions on post 2012 climate agreements was also consolidated into a Ahmedabad Call which was agreed upon and signed by 19 participants.

The workshop was well attended by representatives from participating project cities, government officials, international organisations & local NGOs, research organisations and consultants. All in all, the workshop was very interactive received an overwhelming response. It was evident from the deliberations and presentations that cities are working towards reducing carbon emissions and are making contribution on their parts in solving the global problem of Climate change.

Municipal Commissioner of the city of Ahmedabad addresses the participants

The chief guest at this workshop was the Municipal Commissioner of the city of Ahmedabad. He addressed the participants at the workshop and highlighted on the energy related issues faced by Ahmedabad and the various initiatives taken by the municipal corporation in making the city energy efficient. He also stressed that in some parts of Ahmedabad, age old technologies are being used is water pumping and other sectors so there is an urgent need for technology transfer.

Ms. Hansa Patel, ICLEI Executive Committee Member and Chairperson of All India Institute of Local Self Governments (AIILSG)

Ms. Hansa Patel, Executive Committee Member and Chairperson of All India Institute of Local Self Governments (AIILSG) gave an introduction to ICLEI and the various activities ICLEI South Asia is presently implementing. The Chairperson of SLTAG, Mr. P K Ghosh shared his experience in working in the city of Ahmedabad. He said that some strong measures and transformations need to be taken up to make the city energy efficient.

The workshop was jointly organised by ICLEI South Asia and Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation.
