Cities and Resilience: Progress and Challenges in Addressing Urban Adaptation in Asia

The Cities and Resilience Dialogue will be held in the UN/ESCAP Office in Bangkok, Thailand, from 13-15h, 29 September 2009. The event shall promote increased dialogue on the role of cities in climate resilience and will bring together a set of city representatives from around Asia, representatives from their respective national governments who are attending the UNFCCC meeting in Bangkok,and other interested supporting organizations.

The goal of the dialogue is to provide an opportunity to:

  1. share learning between the cities based on their experiences in addressing the consequences of climate change
  2. learn more about regional efforts to support cities and local actors, and
  3. enable country-specific discussions between city and national government representatives on the roles, capacities, and challenges of cities and local actors to contribute toward fulfillmentof the commitments in the Copenhagen Agreement and achieving realprogress in addressing climate change.

The event will put the spotlight on local action on adaptation and resilience in the run-up to the COP-15 meeting.

The event is organised by the Rockefeller Foundation, International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) and the ProVention Consortium as part of the Asian Cities Climate Change Resilience Network (ACCCRN), in collaboration with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific  (UN/ESCAP) and the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction Secretariat (UN/ISDR).
