United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG)

Founded in May 2004, United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) is the united voice and world advocate of democratic local self-government. Based in Barcelona, UCLG is the largest local government organization in the world. Representing over half the world’s population, the cities and association members of UCLG are present in 136 UN Member States across seven world regions – Africa, Asia-Pacific, Europe, Eurasia, Middle East and West Asia, Latin America and North America. Over 1000 cities are direct members of United Cities and Local Governments, as well as 112 national associations which represent all the cities and local governments in a single country.

C40

C40 is a group of the world's largest cities committed to tackling climate change. Cities have a central role to play in tackling climate change, particularly as cities bear a disproportional responsibility for causing it. In fact, cities consume 75 per cent of the world's energy and produce 80 per cent of its greenhouse gas emissions. That is why it is so important for cities to work together, set the agenda on this issue and show leadership on this issue. Through effective partnership working with the Clinton Climate Initiative C40 will help deliver emissions reductions and better energy efficiency.

World Mayors Council on Climate Change

The World Mayors Council on Climate Change (WMCCC) is an alliance of committed local government leaders whose concerns about the effects of climate change on their communities has prompted them to foster international cooperation, and to advocate for effective climate protection policies. There are presently 20 members of the WMCCC, representing a vast network of local governments working to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions.   Membership to the WMCCC is open to mayors and equivalent leaders of municipal levels of government.  Mayors whose term has expired are welcome to maintain their WMCCC membership and continue lending their expertise and advice. www.iclei.org/wmccc
