The highly reputed international Cities for Climate Protection (CCP) program was initiated by ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability in the early 1990s. CCP focuses on the greenhouse gas emissions that local governments contribute to global warming directly of around 1–2% and their indirect influence and leverage over 50% of emissions from their communities.
Energy, waste and transport are the foci for inventories and forecasts, reduction goals, action planning, implementation, monitoring and reporting. The business case is based upon reduced carbon emissions, returned savings and identified short- and medium-term payback investments.
