Cities at the heart of the Climate Change Challenge - the Fifth Urban Research Symposium of the World Bank

Climate Change and the essential role of cities in tackling this urgent global challenge, was at the forefront of the 5th Urban Research Symposium of the World Bank, held between 28 and 30 June in Marseille, France. The event gathered 600 participants from 80 countries for plenary and parallel sessions, including a UCLG plenary session dedicated to the importance of good local governance as a tool for effective climate strategies.

The World Bank is placing climate at the heart of its urban policy and recognizes that in many countries, it is cities that are leading the way in global development challenges. "Today, the importance of cities in global geopolitics is clear for all to see," acknowledged a member of the World Bank, "they are directly implicated in climate change and affected by its consequences"´.
