Sub-National Workshop on Indian Cities' Perspective on Post-2012 Climate Agreement & Actions

The main goal of the workshops was to build awareness on international negotiations and environmental treaties and to discuss issue of climate change and the activities undertaken internationally to address this issue. Furthermore, Energy Status Reports and the implementation of City Action Plans – generated under the Roadmap of South Asian Cities and Local Governments for the post-2012 global climate agreement and actions project – were discussed.

At the end of the workshops, participants adopted the Mysore Call which focuses on the awareness amongst local governments on climate change and their role in confronting this global problem on behalf of their communities.

The chief guest of this workshop was the Mayor of Mysore City, Sri. Purushotham, along with opposition party leaders.The Mysore City Corporation Commissioner, Sri. K S Raykar, gave the welcome address and indicated Mysore city’s interest in working for energy reduction and bringing in efficiency in the provision of utilities.

The conference was also attended by the District Magistrate and Deputy commissioner of Mysore district, Sri. Manivannan, who indicated his interest in the Roadmap project and expressed his views on the need for strengthening technical capacity of urban local bodies.

Ms. Vidya Soundarajan, Sr. Regional Adviser – Climate Change & Energy, from the British Deputy High Commission, Chennai, was a special guest to the workshop and addressed the delegates and apprised them of British High Commission’s interest in furthering activities related to mitigation and adaptation to climate change in India.

The workshop was jointly organised by ICLEI South Asia, Infosys, Mysore Municipal Corporation and City Managers’ Association Karnataka at the Infosys campus in Mysore.
