Ad-Hoc Expert Group Meeting on Sustainable Development Report on Africa (SDRA) Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 24 to 26 June 2009

 2009/09/13

Grace Stead, ICLEI-Africa SCP Manager, attended the Ad-Hoc Expert Group Meeting on Sustainable Development Report on Africa (SDRA) held at the UN Conference Centre in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 24 to26 June 2009. The main purpose of the meeting was to provide input into the regional review reports on five thematic areas:

• Chemicals

• Waste Management

• Mining

• Transportation

• Sustainable Consumption and Production

The aim was to re-enforce international commitment constraints and implementation strategy. Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) needs to fulfil macro development goals and objectives that include the improvement of human wellbeing in Africa. By the end of the event five thematic review reports had been reviewed, with a summary document that will be distributed by UNEP / UNECA over the next few weeks to enable active participation at CSD 18.

The following main projects were identified for support:

• Capacity building for National SCP Action Plans (UNEP, ARSCP, MTF) – education and best practice with entry point on SPP platform with concrete results

• African Local Sustainable Consumption and Production Initiative (ICLEI, ARSCP, UNEP, MTF)

• Regional Programme on resource efficiency and cleaner production including building capacities of NCPCs and SCP institutions (UNEP, UNIDO)

• African Eco-labelling Programme - including organic agriculture, forests, fish, tourism (ARSO, ARSCP, UNIDO, UNEP)

• Education on Sustainable Living / SCP in Africa (ICLEI)

• Sustainable Building and Construction (ICLEI)

• Promote Integrated Solid Waste Management in Africa (ICLEI)

• Small scale renewable energy and biomass based co-generation

There was an interesting discussion around the importance of linking the Marrakesh Task Force (MTF) to the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) as the MTF is a small but strong mechanism while the CSD brings along the political support over the long-term. MTF is a dynamic multi stakeholder platform that supports the implementation of projects and programmes on SCP base on regional and national priorities, as well as a Global Framework for Action on SCP (10YFP).

Many thanks to UNEP and UNECA who funded the participation of ICLEI at this event.
