Kathmandu Call Signed at the National Workshop on Nepal Cities' Perspective on Post 2012 Climate Agreement

On June 8, the National Workshop on Nepal Cities' Perspective on Post-2012 Climate Agreement’ in Kathmandu, Nepal, mobilised more than 60 delegates from municipal corporations of 15 cities in Nepal, NGO members and various other organisations.

The workshop was inaugurated by Mr. Umesh Prasad Mainali, Secretary at the Ministry of Environment Science & Technology. Esteemed guests included governmental leaders, such as the Secretary for Municipal Management at the Ministry of Local Development, Mr. Yagya Prasad Gautam, high-level officials the Municipal Association of Nepal (MuAN) and executive officers from various municipal corporations in Nepal.

The main goal of the workshop was to build awareness on international negotiations and environmental treaties and to discuss issue of climate change and the activities undertaken internationally to address this issue. Furthermore, outcomes of the project ‘Roadmap of South Asian Cities and Local Governments for the post-2012 global climate agreement and actions’ were presented, such as Cities’ Energy Status Reports and the implementation of City Action plans.

At the end of the workshop, participants adopted the Kathmandu Call which focuses on the awareness amongst local governments on climate change and their role in confronting this global problem on behalf of their communities. Furthermore, the Energy Status Summaries.

The workshop was organised under the Roadmap of South Asian Cities and Local Governments for a post-2012 global climate agreement and actions project, supported by the British High Commission. The workshop was organised by ICLEI - South Asia, in collaboration with the local partner Municipal Association of Nepal (MuAN).
