To provide leadership and encourage partnership in caring for the environment by inspiring, informing, and enabling cities and peoples to improve their quality of life without compromising that of future generations.

We see ICLEI in South Asia as an association:
- supporting environmental and other sustainability initiatives at the local level by working with local governments as well as with state, national and international governmental bodies in order to build a supportive policy environment for local initiatives;
- mobilizing and providing support to local-level initiatives that address specific priority problems of local and global significance;
- providing training and education programs on environment and sustainable development;
- helping to develop and strengthen local capacity and expertise;
- supporting networking among and exchange of experiences between local governments, especially between developing and developed countries;
- working with groups of local governments and partner organizations in order to research, develop, pilot and implement local initiatives for sustainability;
- functioning as a clearinghouse for information, and as a training center, on local sustainable development and environmental policies and programs;
- providing technical support services and consultancy to aid the implementation of local sustainable development and environmental policies and programs;
- working with private corporations and research institutes to develop and exchange environmental knowledge and appropriate environmental technologies;
- promoting the role of local government as a necessary innovator and implementer of sustainable development and environmental policy.
