Round Table – Towards Copenhagen

24 June 2009, Brasília, Brazil

On 24 June 2009, the round table brought together Brazilian government representatives, non-governmental organizations and academics in Brasilia, Brazil, in order to discuss the national climate change strategy towards COP 15.

Representatives of the Brazilian National Delegation to the UNFCCC and from several national ministries presented the national climate change strategy and the resources allocated for this purpose (especially regarding Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation mechanisms), as well as Brazil’s official position within the current international climate negotiations.

During the event, Brazilian local governments – represented by ICLEI LACS - had the opportunity to reinforce their advocacy efforts for the recognition of the important role of local governments in a comprehensive post-2012 global climate agreement.

The event was organized by the Climate Observatory which gathers important NGOs such as The Nature Conservancy, ISA – Social and Environmental Institute, IC- International Conservancy, WWF, Bioatlantica Institute, IPAM – Amazon Environmental Research Institute, Greenpeace and GVCes – Sustainability Research Center from Getúlio Vargas Foundation to discuss climate issues.
