LG Climate Change Leadership Summit in Copenhagen
On 2-4 June 2009, local, regional and national representatives from around the world gathered in Copenhagen for the Local Government Climate Change Leadership Summit. The Summit was a key step in the LG Climate Roadmap as it provided a forum for over 700 representatives from municipalities and regions from more than 60 countries to engage in national-local dialogues. It was organized by Local Government Denmark in close cooperation with ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability and United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), as well as many other global and regional LG associations and international organizations.
- Kadir Topbaş, Mayor of Istanbul, presents the call at the LG Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, 2 - 4 June 2009
The most significant outcome of the summit was a call from local and regional governments to the Parties of COP 15 encouraging Mayors and LG to accept the challenge and responsibility to lead actions to combat the rapid and dangerous rate of global warming. The participants of the summit jointly requested that negotiators include the ideas of the call in the negotiation texts, building on the existing commitments of local government leaders and their associations.
The call is a coordinated effort of the LG Associations present in the Summit. It was presented by Kadir Topbaş, Mayor of Istanbul and Co-President of UCLG, and David Cadman, Vice Mayor of Vancouver and President of ICLEI.
