About the ICLEI Africa Secretariat (ICLEI-AS)

Head Office based in Cape Town, South Africa
The rejuvenated ICLEI Africa Secretariat Head Office is currently hosted by the City of Cape Town (since March 2008), which was successful in securing a bid to host the Secretariat for a period of five years. ICLEI’s host cities provide generous support in the form of grants, staff secondments, office space, and other in-kind support. The Secretariat’s offices are located in the City’s Environmental Resource Management Department building in central Cape Town. With continued growth and increased involvement in new programmes, the ICLEI-AS strives to forge new partnerships and increase member numbers on the African continent. Head Office contact details »

Water Office based in Tshwane, South Africa
The ICLEI-AS Water Office is currently hosted by the City of Tshwane (Pretoria) in the Water and Sanitation Department. The office implements projects as part of the ICLEI Water Campaign. The campaign assists local governments to quantify and qualify water resource use, develop local water action plans, set targets, act on their plans, and track and report goal-achievement. Past projects include LoGo Water (2005 – 2007) and Capacity Building for Integrated Governance in the Management of Water and Sanitation (2005 – 2008). Water Office contact details »

From 14 to 18 June 2009, 600 participants from 57 countries gathered in the City of Edmonton in Western Canada for the triennial World Congress of 'ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability', a global network of 1100 cities working for sustainable development. The programme touched upon many areas of urban environmental sustainability, from Climate & Energy to Biodiversity, and from Resilience & Adaptation to Water. More »

Upcoming Publication: the LAB Guidebook

ICLEI’s LAB Guidebook, produced in close association with IUCN and the CBD Secretariat, is a highly anticipated upcoming publication which, for the first time ever, will provide practitioners with comprehensive guidelines on the multiple aspects of biodiversity management in the challenging local government context. ICLEI Europe holds their Climate Roadmap Regional Summit

The Local Government Climate Change Leadership Summit, the ICLEI European regional Climate Roadmap meeting was held from the 2 - 4 June 2009 in Copenhagen, Denmark. The purpose of the Summit was to develop a draft a response to the negotiating text of the Working Group on long term cooperative action. This negotiating text contains 5 main chapters (shared vision, adaptation, mitigation, technology and access to finance). Gino van Begin, the Director of ICLEI Europe, gives a brief overview of the negotiating text. More »

City of Cape Town Landfill Site Goes Green

Cape Winelands District Municipality – first African municipality to join new phase of LAB - 18 May, 2009

Cape Winelands District Municipality became the first African municipality, and also the first district municipality to join the second phase of the Local Action for Biodiversity (LAB) programme.
