Mayor of Bonn solidifies South-North collaboration on climate action in the lead-up to COP23

Mayor of Bonn, Germany and First Vice President of ICLEI, Ashok-Alexander Sridharan, recently toured Colombia and Bolivia to meet with local leaders. Mayor Sridharan will soon welcome hundreds of local and regional leaders to Bonn at the Climate Summit of Local and Regional Leaders, during COP23, the 23rd United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties.

Accompanied by ICLEI South America's Executive Secretary, Rodrigo Perpétuo, Mayor Sridharan visited Bogotá, the capital of Colombia, and La Paz, the capital of Bolivia, to discuss climate initiatives with local and other subnational political leaders who have made significant strides in areas such as mobility, road safety and risk and disaster reduction. His visit solidifies and builds on collaborative efforts between Bonn and cities in the Global South.

In La Paz, Mayor Luiz Revilla and Mayor Sridharan celebrated the close partnership between La Paz and Bonn, which began more than 10 years ago when Bonn provided technical assistance towards implementing the first emergency disaster alert system in La Paz.

Mayor Sridharan’s visit also coincided with the launch of Ecolab Center in La Paz, an environmental education center designed to raise awareness of the effects of climate change on cities and teach the population how climate resilience, adaptation and mitigation can become an integral part of urban sustainability.

In Colombia, Mayor Sridharan met with, Mayor Enrique Peñalosa of Bogotá, Governor Jorge Emílio Rey of the Cundinamarca region and a diverse array of stakeholders including representatives of ASOCAPITALES, the local association of cities and various development organizations to discuss the implementation of the Paris Agreement in Colombia. In preparation for COP23 and the Climate Summit of Local and Regional Leaders, these actors are exploring the role that subnational governments can play in national contributions and furthering ambition.

Mayor Sridharan encouraged these South American leaders to show their leadership at the upcoming Climate Summit of Local and Regional Leaders. The Climate Summit of Local and Regional Leaders on 12 November 2017, hosted by the City of Bonn and the State of North-Rhine Westphalia, will be the main event for local and regional governments at COP23. While national governments negotiate the rulebook for implementing the Paris Agreement, the Summit will serve as a jumping off point for key initiatives and partnerships that advance climate action across sectors and at all levels of government.
