First North American dialogue on 100% Renewable Energy in Cities

More than 20 North American city leaders discussed the transition towards a 100 percent renewable energy future during a 3-days workshop, including ICLEI network cities Chicago, Denver, Cincinnati, Cleveland, San Diego, Pittsburgh, Oakland, San Francisco and Vancouver.

From July 10-12, 2016, ICLEI USA, Renewable Cities, the Sierra Club, and the City of San Francisco Department of the Environment hosted the first-ever North American Dialogue on 100% Renewable Energy in Cities in San Francisco, CA, facilitating exchange between city leaders on the challenges and opportunities of transitioning to 100 percent renewable energy in one or more energy use sectors such as electricity and transport.

The dialogue participants shared best practices, innovations and opportunities that can play a key role in this transition, including the economic development and social benefits, along with discussing a range of resources and tools available to help them to reach their 100% renewable energy goals. This dialogue provided participants the opportunity to connect to a network of local governments, experts and community-based organizations that support the transition to 100% renewable energy, as part of the partnership between ICLEI USA, Renewable Cities and Sierra club. ICLEI's Global 100% Cities and Regions Network facilitates peer-learning, policy development and help unlock investment in energy efficiency and renewable energy.

This event included remarks from Lisa Jackson, Apple Vice President of Environment, Policy and Social Initiatives and former Environmental Protection Agency Administrator, discussing Apple’s goal of covering the electricity use of their global facilities with 100 percent renewable energy, as well as a leading city panel with San Francisco and Vancouver, represented by Barbara Hale, Assistant GM, Power at San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, and Councilor Andrea Reimer, sharing their best practices in transitioning towards 100% renewable energy, and opportunities for cities to strategically explore the transition to 100% RE. A report on the Dialogue will be released at the end of the summer and made available in the Renewable Cities project’s webpage.
