City leaders celebrate the launch of Ambitious City Promises.

Ambitious cities make their promises at the Seoul Mayors Forum on Climate Change

On 20 October, 2017 in Seoul, city leaders came together to build partnerships and share best practices in the fight against climate change. The launch of the Ambitious City Promises initiative shows the tangible action that cities are taking within global networks and coalitions.

The Ambitious City Promises project supports city governments in developing and implementing low emissions development strategies. The project emphasizes community engagement across all stages of this process and will help cities establish lasting mechanisms to share knowledge and use participatory, bottom-up models for climate action.

The project is inspired by the Promise of Seoul, which brought in the 10 million residents of Seoul as equal partners in shaping and implementing climate action. Seoul Metropolitan Government is a supporting partner on this initiative, aiming to support these cities in their process and spread their message of climate leadership.

Ambitious City Promises will work with nine cities across Southeast Asia that represent a combined population of approximately 36 million. These nine ambitious cities are:

• Jakarta, Bekasi and Tangerang, Indonesia
• Pasig, Marikina and Parañaque, Philippines
• Hanoi, Soc Son and Son Tay, Vietnam

Park Won-soon, Mayor of Seoul and President of ICLEI, helped launch the initiative stating that “ICLEI and Seoul will spare no effort to ensure that Ambitious City Promises is successfully implemented… I hope that these cities can also become role models for others.”

By spreading the vision behind the Promise of Seoul, Ambitious City Promises will show how collective action taken in cities, with inspired leadership from local governments, can contribute to national and global climate goals.

Ambitious City Promises is funded by the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB).
