The Declaration Ceremony of the World Mayors Summit on Climate Change 2013

The Declaration Ceremony took place on Saturday 28 September 2013 in Nantes, France and it began with the testimonies and reports on the global progress on climate commitments and actions at the local level. The Declaration Ceremony concluded on the necessity of joint, inter-level actions to combat climate change and with the formal adoption of the 2013 Nantes Declaration of Mayors and Subnational Leaders on Climate Change.

The discussion within the Declaration Ceremony was moderated by Gino Van Begin, ICLEI Secretary General.

During the whole day the physical science basis on climate change was conducted by Jean Jouzel, Vice-Chair of IPCC Working Group-I and 2007 Nobel Prize Winner.

 


The Adoption of the 2013 Nantes Declaration of Mayors and Subnational Leaders on Climate Change

The presentation of the Declaration was conducted by Ronan Dantec, Climate Spokesperson of United Cities and Local Governments and Member of the Senate, France.

The 2013 Nantes Declaration of Mayors and Subnational Leaders on Cliamte Change began with an introductory Statement made by the Government of Poland, host of COP19/CMP9 in Warsaw, Beata Jaczewska, Undersecretary of State and Ministry of the Environment, on behalf of the President-Designate of COP19/CMP9, UN Warsaw Climate Conference.

The formal adoption speech of the 2013 Nantes Declaration of Mayors and Subnational Leaders on Climate Change was taken by:

The speakers for the Local Government Climate Roadmap 2013 - 2015, Creating the “Friends of Cities” for local climate action, were:

The speakers for the Supporting local climate action were:

  • Richard Kinley, Deputy Executive Secretary, UN Climate Change Secretariat;

  • Naoko Ishii, Chair and CEO, Global Environment Facility (GEF).

 

The final statement was made by Laurent Michel, General Director for Energy and Climate - French Ministry for Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy, on behalf of the Government of France that will host the UN Paris Climate Conference, COP21/CMP11, in 2015.
