After claiming the international Whole City Award for being the most liveable city (of its size) in the world, New Plymouth is "on top of the world" according to Mayor Peter Tennent,  “These awards are further recognition of what we in New Plymouth already know. This is a fantastic place to live, work and visit.”  New Plymouth District Council is one of the fastest advancing councils in the CCP-NZ Programme.

Carbon Neutrality Framework for Local Government

Carbon Neutrality has been advocated by both public and private sector organisations in recent years.  However, currently no single independent global standard for it exists that can be referred to in support of a claim of neutrality.  Many local governments, state governments and even national governments have adopted goals of carbon neutrality and are now in the process of defining what is meant by the concept.

ICLEI Oceania thanks all CCP-NZ councils that sent valuable feedback on the original discussion paper, Framing Carbon Neutrality, and is pleased to publish this guide to carbon neutrality for the Australasian Mayors Council for Climate Protection (AMCCP).

We trust this framework will prove of use to all councils working toward carbon neutrality or considering such action.

Please download a copy of Carbon Neutrality Framework for Local Government.

Poznan Local Government Climate Sessions

The United Nations Climate Change Conference in Poznan, Poland is taking place 1 to 12 December 2008.  At COP14 leaders in local government from all corners of the globe will gather to offer a partnership to national governments and the international community to reduce GHG emissions.

ICLEI has a major role in convening the Local Government Climate Sessions from 9 to 11 December 2008 in cooperation with global partners of the Local Government Climate Roadmap which include UCLG, C40, WMCCC, and Metropolis with others.

NEW INFORMATION: Please see the Briefing Note for Local Government Delegates

In December 2007, ICLEI Oceania supported council representatives who attended the UN conference in Bali.  Again, we would extend support to any participant from New Zealand local government attending Poznan.

Any local government representative planning to attend the conference or side events in Poznan, please contact CCP-NZ so we can ensure you are assisted by ICLEI before and during your visit to Poznan.

Download the Draft Programme for the Local Government Climate Sessions. You can also download the ICLEI  two-year local government global strategy "From Bali (COP 13) to Poznan (COP 14) to Copenhagen (COP 15)".
