About the ICLEI Africa Secretariat (ICLEI-AS)

Head Office based in Cape Town, South Africa
The rejuvenated ICLEI Africa Secretariat Head Office is currently hosted by the City of Cape Town (since March 2008), which was successful in securing a bid to host the Secretariat for a period of five years. ICLEI’s host cities provide generous support in the form of grants, staff secondments, office space, and other in-kind support. The Secretariat’s offices are located in the City’s Environmental Resource Management Department building in central Cape Town. With continued growth and increased involvement in new programmes, the ICLEI-AS strives to forge new partnerships and increase member numbers on the African continent. Head Office contact details »

Water Office based in Tshwane, South Africa
The ICLEI-AS Water Office is currently hosted by the City of Tshwane (Pretoria) in the Water and Sanitation Department. The office implements projects as part of the ICLEI Water Campaign. The campaign assists local governments to quantify and qualify water resource use, develop local water action plans, set targets, act on their plans, and track and report goal-achievement. Past projects include LoGo Water (2005 – 2007) and Capacity Building for Integrated Governance in the Management of Water and Sanitation (2005 – 2008). Water Office contact details »

LAB is a global urban biodiversity pilot project running from 2006 to 2009 and working with a select group of local and regional authorities from around the world. Its overarching aim is to improve biodiversity management at the level of local government. The project forms the first step in the broader ICLEI Biodiversity Initiative. ICLEI World Congress 2009 – Registration now open

Register now to make sure you can join us at the ICLEI World Congress in Edmonton, Canada from 14 to 18 June 2009. Places are limited and the deadline for official registration is 15 April 2009. Reduced fees apply to participants from countries with a Gross National Income (GNI) of less than US$ 9,205. The congress will showcase the vast work of ICLEI members on advancing sustainability. South African Local Authorities once again awarded international Blue Flag status for their beaches

ICLEI member cities, Cape Town and Nelson Mandela Metro (including Port Elizabeth) between them have 10 of the 19 beaches that were officially awarded Blue Flag status for the 2008/9 season.
