Ongoing and completed research projects
Researching and documenting what has already been tried, proven and learned in cities around the world, as well as what new opportunities and pathways exist for sustainable urban policies, is an important part of fulfilling ICLEI’s mission to support and promote sustainable practices and policies in Member cities. The organization must not only follow important scientific and policy debates to inform ICLEI’s own programs and projects, but also strives to contribute to and shape these debates according to the experiences and needs of our Members and the expertise of ICLEI staff worldwide.
ICLEI was one of the first organizations to extensively use the medium of city case studies to inspire local government action and draw the attention of other actors to the important work being carried out at the city level. Started in 1991 by ICLEI Canada, the ICLEI Case Studies series currently includes nearly 200 inspiring good practice examples of local action for sustainability from around the world. The series is overseen by the ICLEI World Secretariat and is complemented by the series of shorter, snappy ICLEI Case Stories and further case studies that have been published as part of thematic reports and projects on various themes.
