Summit concept

The Climate Summit of Local and Regional Leaders will be the jumping off point for key partnerships that support implementation of the Paris Climate Agreement. It will be the feature among a series of COP23 events that lay the groundwork for coordinated local action on climate and sustainability.

Our concept

Local and subnational governments are vital partners in shaping and implementing the architecture for global climate action. They are dedicated leaders in the coordinated efforts of committed non-Party actors, supporting innovative thinking and ambitious goals in order to meet the 1.5-degree Paris Climate Agreement target.

Local and regional governments committed to climate action are forging strategic partnerships to implement an architecture that will foster innovation and science-driven policymaking at the local and subnational level.

They have been strong actors in past United Nations Climate Conferences (COPs). In 2017, they will continue their engagement and prepare a model for their involvement in future COPs: a strong presence over the entire two COP weeks at a Cities and Regions Pavilion, a Climate Summit of Local and Regional Leaders as culmination point for exchange, partnership building and advocacy, surrounded by a series of Summit Days full of events, meetings, gathering and receptions in the days before and after the Climate Summit.

Partners

The City of Bonn and the Federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia are co-hosts of local and regional engagement at COP23 in Bonn. The organizing partner is ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability with its World Secretariat in Bonn, acting on behalf of the Global Task Force of Local and Regional Governments.
The Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) acts as a special partner and lends its support. The growing list includes:

The Bonn 2017 Summit

The Bonn 2017 Climate Summit of Local and Regional Leaders on Sunday, 12 November 2017 will be the jumping off point for key partnerships that support implementation of the Paris Climate Agreement.

The Summit will offer a platform for local and regional leaders to influence the global climate process and check progress in terms of local and regional climate action.

Local and regional governments committed to climate action are forging strategic partnerships to implement an architecture that will foster innovation and science-driven policymaking at the local and subnational level.

As part of their commitment to local climate action, local and regional governments are forging strategic partnerships with other non-Party climate stakeholders. This is an essential part of building an implementation architecture that will foster innovation and science-driven policymaking at the local and subnational level.

The Climate Summit of Local and Regional Leaders will be the feature among a series of COP23 events that lay the groundwork for coordinated local action on climate and sustainability. It will offer a platform for local and regional leaders to influence the global climate process and check progress in terms of local and regional climate action. It will also act as a launch pad for a number of initiatives and partnerships, pushing for swift, effective and integrated climate action at all levels.

The Summit Days

Meetings, events, gathering, reception, side events and engagements with negotiators building up to the Climate Summit and beyond will lay the foundations for new initiatives, platforms and declarations to come out of the Bonn 2017 Climate Summit.

Together with the Marrakech Partnership for Global Climate Action, which provides a 2017-2020 roadmap for catalyzing action among Parties and all other climate stakeholders, and the United Nations Climate Change Secretariat (UNFCCC) stakeholder engagement process, the Climate Summit will be the main platform for local and regional government, together with their partners, to convey a strong message towards the COP23 climate negotiations.
