ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability (known as ICLEI) is a global network working with more than 2500 local and regional governments committed to sustainable urban development. Active in 125+ countries, we influence sustainability policy and drive local action for zero emission, nature-based, equitable, resilient and circular development. Our Members and team of experts work together through peer exchange, partnerships and capacity building to create systemic change for urban sustainability.

Medellín, Colombia
An ICLEI Member since 2013, Medellín is widely recognized for transforming its urban landscape through innovation and social inclusion, and has earned international acclaim for its efforts in sustainable mobility, green infrastructure, and climate resilience.
The city is also emerging as a leader in circular development in Latin America. Confronted with over 1,000 tonnes of daily waste (with plastics representing a major share), the city is pursuing reuse and returnability systems to reduce emissions and extend landfill lifespans. In collaboration with ICLEI and partners through the Circular City Labs project, Medellín developed a dedicated Roadmap on reuse and returnability that now serves as a core part of its Circular Economy Policy.

Mayor Bhalla is steering Hoboken toward a resilient and climate-smart future. With bold initiatives like the Rebuild by Design – Hudson River Project, he’s integrating flood protection, park expansion, and infrastructure upgrades to shield the city from rising sea levels and chronic rainfall while enhancing public space for all.
Under his leadership, Hoboken also established a dedicated Department of Climate Action & Innovation, advanced electrification, implemented bans on single-use plastics, and set ambitious targets for net-zero energy and carbon neutrality. He believes in aligning climate finance with local needs, ensuring that every investment strengthens both resilience and community well-being.
