What began in 1990 as one of the first global networks of local and regional governments advancing environmental initiatives has grown into a strong, worldwide joint force of 2,500 jurisdictions committed to sustainable development in over 125 countries. United by a shared commitment to sustainable urban development, we celebrate our journey with this special anniversary video, featuring our leaders and experts driving action on the ground.

Chefchaouen, Morocco
An ICLEI Member since 2019, Chefchaouen, the “blue pearl of Morocco,” is famed for its striking blue buildings set against the Rif Mountains. Under the leadership of Mayor Mohamed Sefiani, ICLEI Vice President, the city has made sustainable development a priority, from protecting biodiversity to advancing ecotourism. Its Vision Chefchaouen 2030 charts a clear path to localizing the Sustainable Development Goals, with a focus on sustainable energy, e-mobility, and innovative waste solutions.

Dr. Maimunah Mohd Sharif, Mayor of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Under the leadership of Datuk Seri TPr Dr. Maimunah Mohd Sharif -Mayor of Kuala Lumpur, former Executive Director of UN-Habitat, and advisor to the ICLEI Global Executive Committee-, the city is advancing a comprehensive sustainability agenda. Kuala Lumpur is accelerating action across energy, urban greenery, waste management, housing, transportation, and education, strengthening its commitment to a healthier, more sustainable urban future.
As both a local leader and Malaysia’s Special Envoy for Sustainable Urbanization, Mayor Sharif is bringing global climate discussions directly to communities. She convened the Kuala Lumpur Town Hall COP, the first city in the ASEAN region to host such an event, calling on all ASEAN cities to organize their own Town Hall COPs. She also urged the COP30 Presidency to elevate the Urban Agenda across all COP meetings, a priority later captured in the Kuala Lumpur Call to Action for COP30.
